The female reproductive organs are called ovaries. The ovaries produce two hormones
known as estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones are also responsible for
developing and maintaining female secondary sexual characteristics or traits, as
well as maintaining pregnancy. Female secondary sexual characteristics include a
high pitched voice, lack of facial and body hair, smooth skin, increased body fat,
a decrease of muscle mass, increase in sexual drive, and enlargement of the
breasts. Along with the pituitary hormones, they also control the menstrual cycle,
and the maturing of the female eggs for reproduction.
The most common change in ovarian hormone production is during the beginning of
menopause. Menopause can also occur when the ovaries are surgically removed or when
put on certain medications. When this occurs, you have a decrease in estrogen levels,
which causes hot flashes, thinning vaginal tissue, hair loss, decrease or lack of
menstrual periods, mood changes, and bone loss (osteoporosis).
